Linux for old computer

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy to install linux live CD distribution based on Debian Testing for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. So don't throw away that old computer yet! The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 64MB old PII 266 systems with pre-configured 128MB swap to the latest powerful boxes. 128MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. . A special XFCE edition made in collaboration with the MEPIS Community called MX-14 "Symbiosis" is also available.

SparkyLinux is a lightweight, fast and simple Linux distribution designed for both old and new computers featuring customised Enlightenment and LXDE desktops. It has been built on the "testing" branch of Debian GNU/Linux.

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. TinyCore

The Core Project is a highly modular based system with community build extensions.

It starts with a recent Linux kernel, vmlinuz 3.0, and a 5MB core.gz. MicroCore 8MB is simply the kernel + core.gz - this is the foundation for user created desktops, servers, or appliances. TinyCore is simply the kernel + core.gz + Xvesa.tcz|Xorg.tcz + Xprogs +fltk-1.3.tcz + (user's choice of Window Manager) + wbar.tcz

TinyCore becomes simply an example of what the Core Project can produce, an 12MB FLTK/FLWM desktop.

CorePlus ofers a simple way to get started using the Core philosophy with its included community packaged extensions enabling easy embedded frugal or pendrive installation of the user's choice of supported desktop, while maintaining the Core principal of mounted extensions with full package management.

It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.

The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.




LXLE is based on Lubuntu which is an Ubuntu OS using the LXDE desktop environment. It is designed to be a drop-in and go OS, primarily for aging computers. Its intention is to be able to install it on any computer and be relatively done after install. At times removing unwanted programs or features is easier than configuring for a day. Our distro follows the same LTS schedule as Ubuntu. In short, LXLE is an eclectic respin of Lubuntu with its own user support.

Raspberry PI 2 規格

Raspberry PI 2 已於Model B 正式於 3/2/2015 推出, 昨天看RS Online (HK)已有貨, 今天就缺貨到20日才出貨。不過筆者已訂貨, 稍後到貨出開箱文。根據Raspberry Pi Blog 表示可使用Windows 10, 真是讓人興奮的消息。

Mac using NTFS Harddisk

1.  Install OSXFuse http://sourceforge.net/projects/osxfuse/
 - Tick "MacFUSE Compartibility Layer"
2.  Install NTFS-3G http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.hk/2010/10/ntfs-3g-for-mac-os-x-2010102.html
- If it appears "can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer",  hold "option" option and select  "open".
- Caching Mode 選 "No Cache"
- Ignore "restart" warning

4.  Restart computer.

How to install a Banana Pi Operating System image on an SD card. You will need another computer (MAC / PC) with an SD card reader to install the image.

Format the SD Card

You might want to format your SD card to FAT32 before you write the image.
SDFormatter is a great free tool for format the SD Card in both Windows / MAC.

Format is simple, just install and follow the instruction you will find it is easily done in few minutes.



Writing an image to the SD card

With the image file of the distribution of your choice, you need to use an image writing tool to install it on your SD card.  Most image download from lemaker.org are compressed into .tgz format which need to extract twice in windows / MAC machine.


Steps:
  1. Unzip .tgz using 7-ZIP(windows) / Unarchiver(mac)
  2. Unzip .tar using 7-ZIP again, you will get the .img file.
  3. (Windows) Write the image using Win32 Disk Imager, Download
    (MAC) Use "Terminal":

  1.  Reject the card safely.

The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. (Ref: Wiki, Raspberry PI Official Website).


Banana Pi is a single-board computer made in China. It can run Android, Ubuntu and Debian. Raspbian can be run, though the CPU complies with the requirements of the Debian armhf port.[1] It uses the Allwinner A20 SoC and as such is mostly covered by the linux-sunxi port.
Banana Pi has no direct relationship to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, though its similarities are clear.[2] "Linux user & Developer" does not consider it a "direct clone, but a considerable evolution," whilst linux.com similarly sees it as a clone with improved performance.[3][4] The board layout is very similar to the Raspberry PI board, though it's about 10% larger and the relative spacing of some connectors varies. Banana Pi is much faster than Raspberry PI.  However, Raspberry PI has a very large user group, many interesting projects can be found based on Raspberry PI (Raspberry PI community).
